About Us

Macgregor Smith is an award winning landscape architectural consultancy based in the City of Bath. The company was formed in 1991 and is led by Michael Smith.

We are a design led practice and proud of our reputation for commitment and enthusiasm for quality of product and service.

Deep experience of high profile demanding work together with a team of designers of the highest calibre has given us the profile necessary for the delivery of projects on a national and international level.  We offer a range of services:

Fundamental to our approach for projects of all types is to discover the special qualities of a site and its context, to draw inspiration from these, and, through collaboration with our design partners achieve a special sense of place.

Masterplanning

The establishment of a robust and flexible framework underpins our approach. But in progressing this we believe strongly in the development of a clear vision, which in turn informs our central responsibility, that of Place Making. Our work in the development of Public Realm and Open Space Strategies has attracted awards including ‘Best conceptual project contributing to London’s Future Award’ – The London Planning Awards 2008 – for Brent Cross Cricklewood.

Urban Place Making

We are active in large scale projects for cities throughout the UK and Europe.  We are currently working in the World Heritage City of Durham, Harlow New Town, and in a number of London boroughs.  Our approach to the creation of distinctive spaces is borne from in-depth site analysis and a design response which draws out a clear character, often inspired by the social history, natural landscape and biodiversity of the area.  We bring deep experience and enjoyment of the process of community and stakeholder engagement;  this process of testing and learning can only improve the quality and sustainability of our work in the development of an inspiring public realm.

The Landscape of the Workplace

Over 20 years of working closely and regularly for key property developers including Goodman, Land Securities, MEPC, and British Land has given us a position as market leaders in this field. Following through from sound conceptual work, we have a special skill in achieving the highest quality of design and service through detailed design to installation. We have a sophisticated understanding of costs and a supply chain which informs the robustness of our design work. We have consistently won awards for this including 2009 BALI Principal Awards for guiding Goodman’s landscape management.

The Landscape of Leisure

This year our work at Celtic Manor Resort, due to host the 2010 Ryder Cup, lifts our extensive portfolio to an international profile. The project complements our work for Daimler as landscape architects for the creation of Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands, a new landscape celebrating a high technology product, and the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit.

The Shopping Environment

Where a client aspires to achieving a special quality to a development, our knowledge of the requirement of the shopping environment and aspiration to produce a distinctive character with immediate visual effect has attracted many commissions. We act as both ‘Place Making’ consultant and traditional landscape architect, from concept to installation. We have been active throughout the UK and are currently working through Spain.

Residential Landscapes

We bring award winning experience in best practice for strategic requirements of the residential environment of the landscape of sport, play, health and character. This is a sound basis for our detailed work from inner city high rise neighbourhoods with a combination of roof terraces and play parks, to the landscape of private residences.

The Landscape of Education

We bring deep understanding of the issues of design and procurement for a full range of the landscape of education from Universities, through BSF, PCP school projects to traditional “Design and Build”. In all these we begin with the creation of a flexible masterplan and visionary framework for realising the required educational facilities, giving a strong sense of place and pride for students and the community. This and subsequent detail design guides immediate requirements and provides an adaptable framework for future initiatives.
