Eastside Locks

Project Details

Located next to the City Park, Eastside Locks forms part of the eastern regeneration of the city of Birmingham, including significant improvements to the public realm and canalside environment. Working with Goodman and Advantage West Midlands, we assisted Aukett Swanke in developing the masterplan for Eastside Locks. The first phase of the public realm was completed in 2016.

Design Details

  • Existing streets and the historic Digbeth Branch Canal are revitalised through new connections to the City Park, student accommodation, commercial office space and retail space, creating an active community for Eastside Locks
  • Inviting courtyard spaces offer intimate and calm retreats from the busy streets. New public spaces are characterised by a mosaic of granite setts in the floorscape, reminiscent of the vernacular materials of the former warehouses
  • Restoration of the Co-op Building with its rich brickwork and tile facade and retention of the water tower, forming an icon for the development
