Macgregor Smith were employed by Aberdeen Investments to design the landscape and public realm for 10 new high rise residential buildings on the former sidings approach to Lincoln’s historic St. Marks Railway Station. This project is the first phase of a wider regeneration masterplan of the St. Marks Shopping Centre.
The design of the public realm focused on a series of communal courtyards between buildings creating intimate, comfortable garden spaces perfect for resting or socializing. These are linked and framed by generous pedestrian corridors allowing free and open movement through the scheme as an extension of the city’s public realm.
The habit of old railway sidings evolving into linear woodlands which host a rich ecological tapestry was our inspiration for the planting strategy, with naturally regenerating ornamental grasses, pioneer tree species and shade tolerant flowering perennials creating a depth of interest, colour and texture in each courtyard space.
