Bringing joy to every day

The joy we put into our designs starts right here in our studio. Because we believe in creating and maintaining a positive, supportive and inspiring working environment, we’ve always got something going on alongside our day-to-day work – whether it’s tea and cake in the office, summer picnics and day trips, or setting time aside to explore our other passions.

From day one Macgregor Smith has been one of friendliest and supportive practices I’ve ever worked for. I’ve been lucky to work on some brilliant projects with so many genuinely lovely, creative people who’ve really helped me to grow.

The varied, interesting, and often surprising role as a Landscape Architect is why I love my job – one day I’ll be a historian researching the site of a Napoleonic graveyard, and the next I’ll be a scientist looking at how many more species we can attract through habitat recreation! I’m also proud to be part of our increasingly important role in meeting the current and future challenges of society and the climate. It makes me feel like what I do really matters.

Soaking up the southwest

Our studio is based in the heart of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage centre brimming with stories of its own. Looking directly out over the gothic splendour of Bath Abbey, we’re surrounded by centuries of history – sitting just round the corner from the magnificently preserved Roman baths from which the city takes its name. At our doorstep too lies an eclectic lineup of bustling bars, restaurants, shops and cafes, while inspiration simmers in art galleries, museums, theatres and secret gardens.

I joined Macgregor Smith fresh from my undergrad degree at Leeds, and from day one the team have involved me on a really diverse range of projects – from high streets in Bristol to parks in downtown Shanghai. As I’ve continued my Masters degree part-time I’ve had amazing support from the team, who’ve given me invaluable feedback as well as direct experience, elevating my understanding of how the whole life cycle of a project really works.
It’s great to be part of such a warm and friendly team, where everyone is happy to help and chat things through, especially over afternoon tea and cake! I love that every day is different, with the constant excitement of new projects always around the corner.

Nurturing the next generation

We love what we do, and we’re excited about passing on everything we know to the next generation of ground-breaking Landscape Architects. Our P2C mentoring scheme has an excellent track record because of our commitment to helping others learn and grow – and we do this through dedicated mentoring schemes, study groups and Continual Professional Development sessions, which range from talks by external industry speakers, to internal project-sharing sessions and specific software training. All our new graduates and interns also get teamed up with buddies to guide them through the initial learning process and help them on their way to becoming confident, qualified Landscape Architects.
