Glasgow Fort

Evoking the playful nature of the surrounding Scottish woodlands….

Coupling the landscape strategy with public art has created a new identity for Glasgow Fort, evoking the character of the local area and encouraging visitors to engage and make new memories.

Play elements interweave amongst the landscape, encouraging children to play intuitively in amongst the landscape – running between trees, jumping over lawns, bouncing along stepping stones and climbing over logs.

Tree planting within the site echoes the surrounding Scottish woodlands with 12m tall semi-mature Birch trees and native Pines.  Scottish Caithness stone was selected for the main squares, with strongly banded paving along key routes reflecting birch trunk markings in their natural woodland setting.

Playful groupings of bronze deer and screen-printed glass screens help to animate external seating spaces, encouraging people to interact with these elements and evoking an enduring sense of place.

My work with Macgregor Smith has given me the context and the freedom to be more experimental and playful. Respectful of the creative process, they encourage radical ideas and processes, enabling bold decision-making that evolves into confident landscapes that really reflect a sense of place.

By pushing boundaries and thinking outside the box, something truly unique has been created, which showcases the best the area has to offer and raises awareness of the importance of quality green space, art and children’s play in our cities.

It has been wonderful to create and collaborate with such a supportive and inclusive team. Their generous and expansive way of working makes them both brilliant collaborators and conduits for opportunities with exciting clients.
