Nansledan is a new community on the edge of the seaside town of Newquay, along Cornwall’s famous north coast. Taking its name from the Cornish for ‘broad valley’, Nansledan is being led by The Duchy of Cornwall, with a vision to create a thriving mixed-use development, with homes, shops, workspace, leisure and restaurants all within walkable neighbourhoods.
Market Street is at the heart of The Duchy’s ambitious plans for Nansledan, with artisan retail spaces and a new Food Hall celebrating the very best of Cornish produce. With Market Yard at its centre, the area aims to deliver a vibrant daytime and night-time destination for both residents and visitors.
“The focus for Market Street will be on commercial premises that encourage local artisans and businesses with their own unique character, focusing on leisure, health and wellbeing and the creation of community spaces that encourage social activity and vibrancy.”
Duchy of Cornwall
Market Street and Market Yard have been designed to encourage a unique sense of place, inspired by the historic local Killas farmsteads of Gusti Vean, Gusti Veor and Chapel Farm. Market Yard will provide a sheltered, flexible space for community events and gatherings, with external restaurant and café seating all contributing to a vibrant, welcoming series of spaces.
The Duchy of Cornwall are an influential advocate for sustainable development and embracing the beautiful surrounding natural habitats, and this has heavily influenced the landscape designs. Use of local, high-quality materials like Cornish granite and slate, salvaged agricultural features and native planting mixes unique to the climate of the Cornish north coast will define a unique place for people to gather and celebrate Cornish produce and local makers.
The main street – Stret an Varghas – has been developed in line with the design manuals for the wider Nansledan development, with impactful street tree planting, Cornish granite seating elements and bespoke signage features.
With construction having started in 2014, Nansledan is already home to some 1,800 people and over 40 businesses, with a strong sense of character and a blossoming community. Nansledan will ultimately comprise of 4,000 homes, with a diverse mix of businesses ranging from exciting artisan shops, cafes, restaurants, offices, health and leisure facilities.
Market Street lies in the centre of the development, adjacent to the recently opened Newquay Strategic Route, providing direct transport links from Newquay and surrounding communities. Market Street will also lie adjacent to Chapel Wetlands, where a new walking, wildlife and leisure trail is being created by the Duchy of Cornwall.
